I could never ever imagine that history could be so interesting and full of suspense!

Do you know the difference between a “Kapuziner”, an “Einspänner” or a “Maria Theresia”? We will seek them out and sample them.

When the Ottoman troops were forced to retreat from the gates of Vienna in 1683, they left behind sacks of little green beans. Before long, an Armenian spy opened Vienna’s first café.

The coffeehouse – the Viennese common living room
Before long, coffee and coffeehouses became an integral part of life in Vienna. As the journalist Alfred Polgar put it, the cafés offered an opportunity to “be alone without being alone”.

Notable locals like Stefan Zweig, Karl Kraus and Sigmund Freud congregated here, alongside servants, drivers and clerks. Some, like Beethoven, even had their mail delivered to their local café.

The 21st century moves in, but the coffeehouse remains the coffeehouse
I will take you to long-established cafés in which writers, people from the movie business and artists of all professions come together, introduce you to a barista who buys his beans directly in Uganda and Brazil and show you fascinating Art Nouveau objects. Along the way, we may pass some extraordinary sights…

The beguiling scent of coffee, different nuances of flavour and modern, artful milk-foam-painting will be our companions.

As a coffee enthusiast, I have spent many years tasting coffee across Europe and the world. Let me share my enthusiasm with you as we explore the magic of coffee preparation through the ages and its central role in everyday life in Vienna.

Duratio about 2 ½ Stunden

Costs € 65,- per person

Includes the tour itself, as well as entrance to the coffee museum collection, milk-foam-painting and, of course, delicous, but also “viennese” coffee.
